In response to SOMA Pilipinas’ mission to foster coalitions that serve youth and community, the Our Place in the Park mini-fair was a gathering that engaged intergenerational families and community members. Unfolding in a beloved SOMA public park named for a famed Filipino American Olympic gold medalist diver, the event included a range of activities, from K-Pop dance sessions and puppet-making to delightful musical performances, film screenings, and complimentary meals. Featured films included two SOMA Sapiens short profile films by Grant Thompson, It Takes The Hood to Save The Hood by Harvey Magsaysay Lozada, and Sa Amin: Our Place by Dyan Ruiz and Nix Guirre.
This initiative builds upon SFUFF’s legacy of curating outdoor film events like Sidewalk Cinema in Lower Polk and City is Alive on Egbert Avenue in the Bayview. Made possible through funding from the City of San Francisco Rec and Park, Office of Economic and Workforce Development, SOMA Success Centers, and California Humanities, this event showcases the power of community collaboration.
